Recognition of the State of Palestine: Without LFI, the left calls on Emmanuel Macron to "see the process through to the end"

Recognition of Palestine must be accompanied by "legal capacity" for the country, "massive" humanitarian aid, and sanctions against Israel, insist several left-wing leaders.
By Le Parisien with AFPA joint call for strong action. The leaders of the Socialist, Green, and Communist parties asked Emmanuel Macron, in a letter made public on Monday, to "follow through" with the process of recognizing Palestine , granting it "legal capacity" and "massive" humanitarian aid, while sanctioning Israel.
The decision to recognize the State of Palestine must "only be a first step," write Olivier Faure (PS), Marine Tondelier (the Ecologists) and Fabien Roussel (PCF), who initiated this initiative, in this letter dated Sunday.
The three officials called on the French president "to act immediately to ensure that the State of Palestine (...) enjoys all the rights recognized to UN member states," including international capacity and "legal protection."
They also urge Emmanuel Macron to respond to "two emergencies," through "massive humanitarian aid" to "the martyred" and starving Gazan population, and by bringing to France's partners "the demand for sanctions against the Israeli government, in particular the suspension of the association agreement" between Israel and the European Union, "as long as international law is not respected." "Act before it is too late," these left-wing parties urge.
In a similar move, five unions (CFDT, CGT, Unsa, Solidaires, FSU) "welcomed" in an open letter sent on Monday the decision of the French president to recognize the State of Palestine, and called on him to go beyond "incantatory speeches."
Announced for September, this recognition should take place "without delay, while Palestine is disappearing before our eyes," write the union leaders, including Marylise Léon (CFDT) and Sophie Binet (CGT), in the preamble.
"Political inaction has gone on for too long. An immediate ceasefire must be imposed, and a return to professional humanitarian aid must be implemented. Only sanctions can put an end to the deadly headlong rush of Benjamin Netanyahu's government," the signatories of the letter believe.
Following the French president's announcement on Thursday that he will formally recognize the Palestinian state in September, an international conference is taking place Monday and Tuesday at the UN . Co-chaired by Paris and Riyadh, it aims in particular to convince the major powers to join France's position.
